Kendrick Lamar took over the music conversation over the weekend with the surprise release of his latest album GNX on Friday, and now on this Monday morning (for the West Coast) he’s sharing the music video for “squabble.”
The video was directed by Calmatic, another collaboration that shines a light on how much the creative scene in LA continues to drive the culture. The song sounds like LA, so it was fitting that the visual showcases that inseparable connection with everything from local highway signs and dancing cholos to lowriders and rival gangs doing what rival gangs tend to do when they meet.
There are also a couple of musical references in the visual with a huge CD of Nate Dogg’s G-Funk Classics hanging from the chandelier, along with depictions of Ice-T’s Power and Isaac Hayes’ Black Moses
Something tells me the part when he’s reading a book called How to Be More Like Kendrick for Dummies is a recommendation for Drake to check out during his winter break.
