Manila-born and now Los Angeles-based artist Eyedress has released his latest EP, Vampire in Beverly Hills, which features a whopping 34 tracks that span over 79 minutes. If you’re a die-hard fan of this instrumentalist and singer-songwriter, April 19th could’ve been considered an early Christmas for you as Eyedress unleashed an amazing compilation of cuts.
Ever since I was introduced to this amazing talent in 2021 at the supremely-dope Riot Fest, I’ve kept an eye on his work and he’s impressed me with his upward trajectory and consistency over the last few years. “Jealous” hit viral status following its 2019 release and that was undoubtedly a leapfrog for the Filipino artist to sign a major record deal with RCA in 2023 following his last full-length release in 2022.
Track by track, this compilation gives you an awesomely eclectic range of vibes to enjoy. The influences jump from lo-fi hip-hop to post-punk to ’80s-influenced goth to alt-rock to synthwave to electropop and a million more. Each song offers listeners something new, whilst the EP still feels wildly cohesive and synchronized. Many of these cuts represent everything I love about the Belarusian group Molchat Doma; rhythmic and high-toned basslines with sporadically fast drum patterns make for such ominous yet danceable music.
Eyedress enlists over 30 unique features on this project and each collaborative track feels like such a natural collaboration, as if he was in the studio with each of these artists when creating the cuts rather than sending instrumentals, verses, and choruses back and forth digitally. I’d say my favorite features on this album are Cuco, Trit95, Rico Nasty, his wife Elvia, Buddy, and HOMESHAKE.
I’d love to see Eyedress at Pitchfork Music Festival in the next few years, a lot of his comprehensive discography perfectly represents the feel-good, upbeat, and mysterious essence of P4kfest.
Vampire in Beverly Hills is the first body of work since 2022’s FULL TIME LOVER which also ran for just over an hour as well. The release of this EP comes ahead of his forthcoming tour dates, including festival performances at Head In The Clouds NYC as well as Lollapalooza (can’t wait for that set), headlining dates across the East Coast, and supporting dates for both Freddie Gibbs and Glass Animals. Look below for some more information on those dates and be sure to grab tickets here.
A few of my favorite cuts off this compilation are “How It All Starts” (feat. Dent May & Pearl & The Oysters), “Changing Faces” (feat. Cuco), “It’s All In Your Head” (feat. Rico Nasty), “Sci-Fi Fantasy” (feat. Sy Chio), “Gone In A Heartbeat” (feat. Buddy), “Waitin In The Ride” (feat. HOMESHAKE), and “OFW” (feat. Vex Ruffin).
Catch Eyedress on tour and be sure to give this EP some solid listening time.
