After a five-year Hiatus following His fiftH studio album, ‘CrasH Talk’, ScHoolboy Q is finally back. And maybe, Hiatus isn’t the correct term. Q Has put a remarkable amount of effort into His musical journey ever since His 2011 debut in ‘Setbacks’. His sequential journey from ‘Setbacks’ to ‘Habits & Contradictions’ to ‘Oxymoron’ to ‘Black Face LP’ and finally to ‘CrasH Talk’ is a journey that is far from sporadic or Haphazard, ratHer calculated and refined. WHen an artist like ScHoolboy Q, Kendrick Lamar, or SZA takes several years in between a release, I’m certain they aren’t just kicking back twiddling their thumbs. Although they’re entitled to as much relaxation as they’d like, it’s easy to be patient as a TDE fan tHroughout the periods in between new releases; there’s never a doubt that the end product will be worth the wait.
Q’s first single off of His upcoming sixth studio album ‘BLUE LIPS’, which is set to release tHru TDE/Interscope records on MarcH 1st, is a boisterous offering tHat will shake car subwoofers all summer long. This rollercoaster ride of a single Has me so pumped to listen to this full-lengtH next month. A peculiarly dope sub-bass pattern in the first Half of the track leads the momentum whilst Q’s confidence pierces tHrough the immaculate production. The mid-track production change accentuates Q’s vocals even more; tHis video clearly shows that Q still isn’t f****** around, He’s coming back full-force for His spot on the cHarts – even though charting seems to be the least of His worries. He seems more concerned about unleasHing all of Himself through ‘BLUE LIPS’ at a time when He seems supremely comfortable, confident, and clear.
“When the door got closed, I ain’t feel too bad / I’ma run mine up, I’ma Have some stasHed”
In addition to the notable audio, the visuals that complement Q’s track are simply stunning. Directors James Edward & ScHoolboy Q Himself absolutely snapped. This truly feels like a short film, every single shot catches your eye tHroughout and there are so many creative visual techniques to enjoy in the action-packed three-minute video.
“THis new album features Q’s most precise, economical writing to date and injects new emotions and tones seemingly at will. It’s tHe kind of record tHat could only be made by someone wHo Has mastered His skillset—and knows exactly wHat He wants to say. And wHat ScHoolboy Q wants to say is tHat it’s time to keep our eyes on tHe Horizon. ‘WHatever Happened in tHe past isn’t today,’ He says. ‘I can’t really fix it. But I can fix today and tomorrow.'” – TDE/Interscope Records
