Chicago based singer and multi-instrumentalist virtuoso Gayun Cannon has released an eclectic new track titled “Ai-Ya!”
This is Gayun’s first release of 2023, following the house-inspired “Heal My Soul” dropping in the latter end of last year, which caught the attention of some notable Chicago publications and creatives.
“Ai-Ya” is an incredibly emotionally dense song that lyrically follows Gayun reflecting on the mental strain one feels when faced with trust issues and toxic relationships.
“Ai-Ya,” a Chinese phrase generally used to express frustration, is at the core of the song’s chorus, further personifying her Chinese heritage into her range of influence.
Instrumentally the song pulls in elements of jazz, bossa nova and soul to create something both genre defying and sonically smooth. The guitar is done by Andrew Elias Holowka with production and engineering credits to psyxhe and Cristian Castillo respectively.
From only just starting to drop music a few years ago, it’s clear that Gayun is levels above her peers and should be on everyone who’s reading this’ radar for 2023.
