A few Tuesdays back, we were given the dope opportunity to check out bass prodigy and upcoming pop star Blu DeTiger live at the Metro. Blu DeTiger has gained a lot of buzz over the last couple years, most notably with her breakout single “Figure It Out”, which has racked up tens of millions of streams, and counting.
Prior to this show, we weren’t well versed in her catalog and approached the situation rather optimistically in hopes to hear something new and refreshing; we weren’t disappointed. Blu’s performance was riddled with funky bass riffs alongside a very electric stage presence which made for a truly extraordinary fan experience.
She began her set with one of her most recent singles, “Crash Course”, an electronic pop track that showcases her bass skills from the jump. A following highlight was her performance of the track “Cotton Candy Lemonade”; Blu’s vocals sounded hypnotically beautiful throughout the entire track and the audience undoubtedly felt that energy. Another standout moment was when she performed a cover medley consisting of the following tracks: “Style” by Taylor Swift, “Electric Feel” by MGMT, and “Glamorous” by Fergie. This moment was a creative detour within Blu’s setlist; it was impressive to watch how she simultaneously made the songs her own without making them sound like a hacky karaoke cover.
A final moment I wanted to highlight was when she brought out a lucky fan to play bass on stage. This moment was a great show of crowd engagement and is a testament to both her talents as a performer as well as her kindheartedness and appreciation towards fans.
