Earlier this month, in collaboration with Nas-led record label Mass Appeal, DJ Premier released a five-track EP titled ‘Hip-Hop 50: Vol. 1.’ This EP is the first installment in a ten part series in which ten different producers are in charge of curating tracks featuring artists all throughout hip-hop’s history. This series is a part of a much larger project Mass Appeal has been working on to celebrate hip-hop’s 50th anniversary which includes a multi-media takeover from podcasts to digital shorts. Every installment will be released bimonthly with the next being from Swizz Beats.
DJ Premier’s edition features a star studded feature list and I truly fear for Swizz for having to follow such a hard hitting culmination of tracks. Limited to just five tracks it seems Preemo was able to cultivate some eclectic pairings with artists collaborations from Remy Ma and Rapsody to Lil Wayne and Slick Rick.
In a statement on the project Preemo said, “Hip Hop continues to inspire fans across the globe and it’s incredible to think of what the next 50 years will bring.” This project is definitely worth checking out and the remainder of the series should definitely be on your radar for the rest of the year.
