Today we have the pleasure of premiering a new song and video from Jewels Gold, entitled “Royalty/Life Is Meant to Be Lived.”
The track boasts an impassioned vocal performance from Jewels Gold while also playing piano in this 6+ minute-long song. If you’re a fan of Classic Rock, you may pick out how the singer took inspiration from Queen’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” and The Beatles’ “Golden Slumbers / Carry That Weight,” but I also hear a little bit of Kansas’ “Dust in the Wind” peeking through.
Familiar inspirations aside, what stood out to me was how Jewels Gold provides some perspective on how she’s moving forward despite the inescapable obstacle that is the global pandemic, which is uniquely affecting younger generations, who don’t get to grow up the same way previous generations experienced this pivotal part of life. If you live your life like you’re the main character in a movie, this is the type of song that you play to keep yourself getting back up.
Watch Jewels Gold reflect on life in this era defined by volatility in the video above.
Jewels Gold commented to us about how the song came to life:
I wrote ‘Royalty’ during quarantine, feeling like I was missing out on life. I started with the lyrics ‘Wake me up when this is over, I don’t wanna feel until it’s something real.’ I was 20 years old and knew my whole life was ahead of me and I was stuck at home, so I wrote about my dreams for me and my whole generation — sharing how when this is over, we will make the most of what life has to offer. When I finished writing ‘Royalty,’ it became my favorite song I had ever written, and everything I wrote after that didn’t resonate the same way, until I wrote ‘Life Is Meant to Be Lived.’ One day, I was playing ‘Royalty’ on my piano and then played ‘Life Is Meant to be Lived.’ Once I heard how the songs blended into each other melodically and sonically, I knew that they belonged together as one long song.
