Experimental pop band Japanese Breakfast has released a set of singles apart of the Spotify Singles series in wake of their Best New Artist Grammy nomination. This edition of Spotify Singles focuses on the group producing a reimagined recording of one of their own hits, as well as a cover version of a previous Best New Artist nominee.
Japanese Breakfast has chosen “Skinny Love” by Bon Iver for their cover, a decision front woman Michele Zauner made as she describes, “we felt we could add some interesting instrumentation to the track and celebrate our fellow label mate Bon Iver.” They did so excellently by adding some orchestral instrumentation and a sweet reimagination of the vocal delivery.
The second single Japanese Breakfast chose was one of their own titled “Be Sweet,” the breakout single from their 2021 project ‘Jubliee.’ ‘Jubliee’ was also nominated for Best Alternative Music Album this year at the Grammys.
Japanese Breakfast is performing on Friday at Pitchfork Music Festival for Chicago fans on July 16th.
