Ahead of the beloved new music Friday, we’ve been given a chance to give y’all an advance stream of the new album from The Mary Veils entitled Esoteric Hex.
When I first heard this album, I was captivated by the Philly garage-rockers’ use of fuzz, some dirty production, and their ability to lay down great memorable melodies as much as they can just rock out and let the noise take you away. The LP-opener “Bone Blossom Green” is perhaps the best song for me, but the title track and “Fuzzy 95” do their thing to sway my opinion, too.
According to a press release, the group draws inspiration from the likes of New York Dolls, Johnny Thunders, Osees, and Hot Snakes. It’s also my Chicagoan duty to note that if you’re a fan of Smith Westerns, earlier Twin Peaks, and Post Animal, you’ll dig The Mary Veils.

Esoteric Hex was mixed by Jeff Zeigler & Cory Hanson, and mastered by Ryan Schwabe. Artwork by D. Norsen.
Brian shared a statement with us about the band’s latest work:
The songs on Esoteric Hex were made in the first two months as a band. These songs were the result of those first few practices in our extremely small practice room. Funny, now that I think about it, the walls in that space were orange like the album cover. We tracked it live to capture that sound as much as possible. We wanted it to sound like it would if you come see us play live. We wanted it to sound raw. An open wound. In Philly they say we speak what’s on our minds. We wanted that attitude to come across. Know nothing know it alls.
