St. Vincent’s cover of Metallica’s “Sad But True” has been released. The track is the latest offering from the forthcoming covers album The Metallica Blacklist, which brings together over 50 artists from all kinds of genres to give their own interpretation of the songs making up the band’s iconic iconic self-titled fifth album, better known as The Black Album, in honor of its 30th anniversary.
The original “Sad But True” is best known for its stomping drumming and aggressive, menacing vocals from James Hetfield, and it’s cool to be able to point out how much I’m enjoying this cover finds a good balance between maintaining key elements of the original as well as sounding like a St. Vincent song. The cybernetic remixing adds a dope contemporary touch, while Annie Clark sounds like the voice of a threat built for the modern age.
The Metallica Blacklist will be released on September 10. Stream St. Vincent’s cover of Metallica’s “Sad But True” along with a newly released demo of the track below.
100% of The Metallica Blacklist sales are set to benefit 52 charities selected by the album’s contributors. All profits from this cover will go to Metallica’s All Within My Hands Foundation and North Texas Food Bank.
