Justin time for Opening Day in the MLB, The Strokes have dropped their new music video for “Ode To The Mets.” The director for one of my favorite tracks on The New Abnormal is Warren Fu, who previously the band’s “Threat Of Joy.” video.
The stunning video opens with a view of a Galaga-like arcade game idling while sitting a remote field that has undergone some prehistoric disaster, then it constantly pans out for an animated journey taking the viewer through 8 different settings and eras where civilization appears to have been abandoned. From Native American communities to a bygone but iconic era of New York, from empty high schools to black-and-white family photos from the good ol’ days (one of which an early photo of the band from guitarist Nick Valensi’s private collection).
Warren Fu curated the different animators to execute the animation for each chapter. Staying true to the New York team that helped inspire the song title thanks to a fan culture that lives on hope and promise despite its history, Fu also added subtle hints of The Mets’ colors throughout the video and a few Easter eggs.
Watch it above.
