Singer-songwriter Phoebe Bridgers is officially announcing her next solo album, Punisher. The sophomore effort will arrive June 19th via Dead Oceans, but today we get to hear one of its tracks with new single “Kyoto.”
The track, which Bridgers wrote following her first trip to Japan in February 2019, came along with its music video. As the press release points out, the video was supposed to be shot in Japan until the coronavirus messed up those plans, so instead they went the green screen route and the resulting visual is charming even with its low-budget, 90s VHS aesthetic.
Check it out above. See below for more details on the upcoming album as well as this track.
Says Bridgers of the track via press release:
This song is about impostor syndrome. About being in Japan for the first time, somewhere I’ve always wanted to go, and playing my music to people who want to hear it, feeling like I’m living someone else’s life. I dissociate when bad things happen to me, but also when good things happen. It can feel like I’m performing what I think I’m supposed to be like. I wrote this one as a ballad first, but at that point I was so sick of recording slow songs, it turned into this.
Punisher, written and recorded between the summer of 2018 and the fall of 2019.
