Film’s biggest night took place today and it concluded with Parasite winning Best Picture, Joaquin Phoenix taking home the Oscar for Best Actor for his work in Joker, and Renée Zellweger winning Best Actress thanks to Judy. But at an event celebrating the movies, the music stars also delivered something worth talking about.
Janelle Monáe opened the 2020 ceremony with a performance that paid a nod to film’s that were being recognized that night via costumed backup dancers and she got a little extra help from Billy Porter. Billie Eilish delivered a heartfelt cover of The Beatles classic “Yesterday” to score the “In Memoriam” segment during which the Academy highlighted the loss of artists like Kobe Bryant, Rip Torn, Terry Jones, John Singleton, and Kirk Douglas, among many others.
Some of the other notable musical moments included Elton John playing “(I’m Gonna) Love Me Again” from his biopic Rocketman (which wound up winning Best Original Song), Eminem made a surprise appearance to finally perform his song “Lose Yourself,” which won Best Song back in 2003.
