Rex Orange County released his latest album Pony last Fall and his headline North American tour in its support hit Chicago and we made sure to be there. The Pony Tour‘s stop at the Aragon Ballroom was all about Alexander O’Connor, who had no opening act yet the house was jam packed from front to back.
Despite being scheduled on a Monday night, the crowd was made up of quite a wide range of people, from young teens accompanied by obliging adults to couples enjoying a concert date. The underlying theme for the night was love, with Rex making sure to keep a positive and inviting vibe for his show by having his stage product consist of fake grass and clouds hanging as if they’re floating, along with flowers covering the ground. On the musical side his set including a cover of Alicia Keys’ “No One,” and any time he’d catch a fan yelling an “I love you,” he’d make sure to say it back.
Some of the other high point of the evening included the time he requested from his adoring fans to put away their phones to simply enjoy his rendition of “Best Friend,” plus the energetic encore performance of “Always.”
There are still plenty of dates on The Pony Tour, but of course they’re sold out. If you’re a ticketholder for this tour, consider yourself part of the lucky few.
