Summer Walker drops ‘Over It’ For The Ladies

Summer Walker first caught the public’s eye when she dropped her track “Girls Need Love” and it only continued to gain traction when October’s Very Own, Drake jumped on it, leaving us to search endlessly through his short verse to find as many quotables as we possibly could to tweet out or caption our Instagram pictures with. But while several people just began their journey into the upcoming Atlanta-born, breath of fresh air QUEEN- telling us what we’ve been telling ourselves in the mirrors over and over – she was already working on her next ting.

Summer’s Over It album encompasses so many emotions while her flawless voice slowly but bluntly tells us it’s cool to ‘do you’ in anyway you choose – no matter how detrimental it potentially could be. In so many ways, Summer makes sure to shows us how vulnerable she can be in but also capitalizes on her provocative way of making decisions for herself, as we should as well. She shows us how beautiful things can build in one’s mind over what “could be” even when thinking the best of people and their intentions may backfire.

And if the song titles alone don’t grab your attention, the features will.

In the lengthy (but who’s complaining, lol) album tracklist, Summer teams up with several talented artists to match her fly and even some that came out of left field but surprisingly work, like A Boogie wit da Hoodie on “Stretch You Out.” Summer calls out a guy’s shortcomings and high expectations with this sultry track of a toxic back and forth.

She and Jhene Aiko go off on a track literally labeled “I’ll Kill You,” which shows just how much one can care. The duo’s possessiveness is nothing to test or question.

“If them bitches fly, you better be blind.” (True.)

“If them bitches ’round you, better be blood. If it ain’t me or your mama, shouldn’t be showin’ you no love.”  (Also true.)

But then she goes further to explain how ‘real’ a connection can feel especially when it’s so rare, justifying her point of essentially wanting to kill you, not in  literal sense and all for good reason. (insert upside down smiling emoji)

She combines her soothing raspy tone with other sultry vibed artists like 6lack, Bryson Tiller and even PARTYNEXTDOOR on my personal favorite track “Just Might,” where she emulates a *shrug over how hopeless searching for love can be,  before she carelessly admits she just might be a hoe, with no remorse… leaving us to contemplate why she should even feel any remorse, anyhow?

Summer also made the decision to sample Usher’s 1997 track You Make Me Wanna and then have Usher hop on it. I don’t know about you but the inner elementary-middle school me is LIVING. The entire album runs deep, nearly every feeling is triggered through the 18-track journey.

Summer Walker’s ‘Over It’ is what SZA’s CTRL album was for us in 2017, or what Rihanna’s ANTI album in 2016 gave us: a breath of fresh air and a moment to reflect.

Tune In.
