POD Review: BROCKHAMPTON at WaMu Theater

Five studio albums and five headlining tours later, the self-proclaimed “best boy band since One Direction” is hitting North America with fresh hits and fresh energy, all the while keeping the spirited dynamic they’ve established over the years. BROCKHAMPTON’s new run out on the road has started, and night two of the HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU Tour just roared through Washington Music Theater on Sunday night, October 27. Starting in Vancouver, October 26, the round of live shows is set to conclude in Los Angeles on December 13.

Pacific Northwest fans of the rap supergroup united in Seattle to celebrate their fifth studio album, GINGER. In wake of the August release, BROCKHAMPTON came back into the spotlight with rejuvenated energy, even going as far as saying it’s their best album they’ve produced to date; it’s the band’s second post-Ameer Vann departure, following 2018’s iridescence.

With three crosses hanging above the stage, Kevin, Matt, Joba, Dom, Bearface, and Merlyn hammered out the group’s most prolific records. Seattle was gifted a 19-song setlist featuring the best of the very best from their roundup of hits that have been ensuing since their introduction to the mainstream rap realm with SATURATION in 2017.

On Sunday night, a lone Kevin Abstract radiated out of the pre-show darkness and spit out his electrifying verse off “St. Percy” to kick off the set, with the six stage members following suit, setting the stage for a high-intensity night. Dom McLennon immediately made his presence felt on with his captivating lyricism, Matt Champion followed course with his smooth on-stage persona, Merlyn Wood succeeded as hype man with his dance moves & heavy vocals on stage, Joba’s powerful delivery amplified WAMu’s already-bursting energy, and Bearface’s melodic vocals smoothed out the group’s overall sound, rounding up a supergroup of six multi-faceted artists with nothing to hide and everything to prove. GINGER may have solidified the boy band’s preeminence in the music industry, but trust me when I say you simply cannot experience BROCKHAMPTON’s true brilliance until you witness the HEAVEN BELONGS TO YOU tour for yourself.
