When The Internet’s Steve Lacy announced his solo debut album it conjured up some well-earned hype, so when Apollo XXI arrived and it was met with critical acclaim, it only made that much more sense to expect that the live experience would be just as rewarding.
We got a chance to witness the opening date of Lacy’s first solo headline tour when it the House of Blues here in Chicago and it was clear from the start this man was made for the spotlight all on his own. Kari Faux, who’s most appreciated here at POD these days for her stellar feature on the Pivot Gang’s “Mortal Kombat,” helped kick-off the night to play some tunes. Another highlight from this show was when Lacy treated the attending audience to a surprise appearance from Chicago’s own Ravyn Lenae, whose 2018 EP Crush was produced by Lacy.
Steve Lacy’s Apollo XXI is up there among the best albums to drop in 2019, so if his North American or European legs are headed to a town near you, you get your ass out to one of those shows and take in the vibes.
