Riot Fest 2019 sucked, just the way we like it. The opening day of one of the nation’s most beloved festivals came out punching with a number of heavy-hitters that fans congregating at Douglas Park over the weekend could enjoy.
The main attraction of the night was blink-182, with the Pop-Punk icons making use of their headline set to play their hit album Enema Of the State in its entirety as a special treat for the diehards around while making room on the setlist for other classics like “I Miss You,” “First Date” & “Dammit” that got the crowd singing along in a frenzied way. I was bummed to not be able to shoot their performance from the pit but catching another live set was a pretty decent consolation prize.
If I had to pick a favorite performance, though, it has to be the Flaming Lips. Wayne Coyne and crew always put a lot of thought into their stage production and this time it was as beautiful to witness as you should expect. The whole set was fucking lovely and it’s a fantastic musical experience in so many aspects. The lights, the confetti canons, Coyne walking on the crowd inside an inflatable ball. It’s the kind of fun you want at a music festival.
