The Rapture sure haven’t missed a step after coming back from a five-year absence this year after word said they’d disbanded back in 2014 . Luckily for us in Chicago, one of their live appearances happened to be the local House of Vans’ House Parties summer series, and damn was this a fun event to attend.
As is customary for all of these house parties at the HoV, the band curated this show both in its lineup as well as the art installations. For this event, the New York outfit adorned one of the lounge walls with three long, white sheets featuring patterns made out of blue lines, which was then also seen on The Rapture leader Luke Jenner’s shirt for his headline performance, and its wave-like look also inspired the balloon fixture that adorned the House of Vans staircase.
On the music side of things, this was a Luke Jenner affair. Jenner appeared during each set of the night, being the second half to the duo named Tandem Jump along with playing drums as part of Seedy Films. I’ve got to say, I dug the energy of the latter, which delivered a melodic chaos of a set. It was underground and experimental, which was a good way to send a jolt into the bodies of those in attendance in preparation for the dancing that was to come.
Once it was time for the dancerock icons to hit the stage, this place turned into a real party. The Rapture’s mix of Punk, Electronic, and Disco elements were put on great display during performances of songs like “In The Grace of Your Love,” “Whoo! Alright – Yeah… Uh Huh.,” and “How Deep Is Your Love,” all of which got all of us in the crowd grooving. Still, nothing compares to hearing the intro for “House of Jealous Lovers,” with that cowbell sequence getting everyone instantly hyped to start shaking our bodies and hollering, too. This song is up there as one of the essential Rock tracks to dance to, so experiencing this one live just takes it to a whole other level.
