Omar Apollo celebrated playing Lollapalooza 2019 by putting on another performance later that night at Chop Shop. The Friday night Lolla aftershow was kicked off by Yoshi Flower, with the Hobart, IN native being largely responsible for the crowd that gathered at the Wicker Park venue.
When Omar finally came out, he was elated about having performed at the fest, saying “we fucking played Lolla!” with a mix of shock and excitement. His fans were just as happy about his accomplishment and responded with loud cheers.
Every now and then he’d stop and say hi to friends and family that had come out, making it feel that much more like a special get-together with day-ones.
One of the highlights came when Omar asked fans to help him sing “Erase.” The place quickly turned into a big sing-along, when the band brought down the tempo and Omar extended the mic out, the whole crowd took over and it felt like a serenata. Omar chimed in with a little falsetto that then inspired some major shrieking of excitement.
While the softer jams demonstrated Omar Apollo’s turned into quite the genre-bending crooner, it was great to see him light up for more energetic tracks like “Kickback,” “Ashamed,” & “Ignoring.” He swings from one side of the stage to the next, making sure he’s giving it his all to the whole room, with the kind of swagger that brings out a certain response from adoring fans. At the end, Omar and crew left the stage. It was cool to see how fans that hadn’t had quite enough just yet started yelling out encore, encore, which quickly turned into otra, otra. Omar came out and played a scorching rendition of “Hijo De Su Madre.”
Being at this show is what legends are made of. For real for real.
