Ahead of her appearance at this year’s Lollapalooza, I got to connect with up-and-coming 16-year-old multi-platinum recording artist Malu Trevejo.
Coming to fame thanks to her dance videos posted to social media, Malu Trevejo has since become an artist making bilingual music of her own to dance to that will fuel many more dance videos from her and fans alike. The Miami-based singer is releasing today her debut EP entitled Una Vez Mas, along with the music video for the title track which we’re also showcasing in this post.
If you’re going to Lolla this weekend, make sure to catch her playing Sunday, August 4th from 12:15-1PM on the Tito’s stage joined by DJ Susie.
Check out the interview plus Malu’s new releases below.
Oscar Oliva (OO): Your debut EP Una Vez Mas is going to be released this coming Friday, August 2nd. What were you hoping to accomplish with the making of this collection of songs? What were some of the artists & sounds that inspired you while making the project?
Malu Trevejo (MT): With this collection of songs I was hoping to share with my fans some of my favorite songs that I’ve recorded. Definitely latin sounds inspired me while making this project.
OO: Do you have a favorite song on the EP? What makes this your favorite?
MT: My favorite song is Hace Calor because its a hot summer song and I did it with my boy Jeon.
OO: I read about your relationship with having to learn English after moving to Miami. With you being in the position to reach a wide audience, why has it been important for you to incorporate Spanish into your lyrics and show that part of your heritage?
MT: It’s been important to me to show my Spanish heritage because it makes me who I am. My heritage influences me and my music.
OO: Can you tell me about how you feel about the rise of Spanish/bilingual music in the US and what it means for the music industry that it’s so popular?
MT: I feel that the rise of Spanish/bilingual music in the US is great, and important for a country and industry that is a melting pot.
OO: What’s been the toughest challenge going from an established social media personality to making a name for yourself in the music world?
MT: The toughest challenge has been dealing with the haters and ignore them and keep doing what I love.
OO: You gained popularity posting videos of yourself dancing and lip-syncing to music. What does it feel like to know that now it’s your own music that can soundtrack your dancing videos for social as well as for plenty other people that like to post this kind of videos?
MT: It is an awesome feeling. I have so much fun dancing to the music I create and hope others have just as much fun.
OO: You mentioned in another interview that you and your family like to celebrate the release of your new songs by throwing a BBQ. You’re about to drop a new EP, so what do you guys have planned to celebrate this?
MT: We’re going to keep tradition going and have another BBQ at home with close family and friends and of course my team.
OO: You’re playing Lollapalooza on Sunday here in Chicago. What can fans expect for that upcoming performance?
MT: They can expect to dance a lot during my performance!
OO: What comes next for you?
MT: I’m going to continue working on dropping new music and performing for my fans.
