The Rolling Stones’ Rock and Roll Circus is hitting sales shelves once again via a reissue as a deluxe box set which will include a 3xLP soundtrack (coming to vinyl for the first time) as well as the remastered film on Blu-ray and DVD, rare photographs, and a collection of unreleased songs.
The 1968 TV special included performances from the Who, Marianne Faithfull, Jethro Tull, and The Rolling Stones themselves. Perhaps the most uniquely exciting performance came from the supergroup called The Dirty Mac, which consisted of Eric Clapton, Keith Richards, Jimi Hendrix Experience drummer Mitch Mitchell, led by none other than John Lennon. While I absolutely love their rendition of Beatles track “Yer Blues,” the high-point of this special is the Stones playing what is to me the definitive version of “Sympathy for the Devil.” It’s sexy, menacing, and even entrancing sometimes.
Among the unreleased songs you’ll find in the box set is a recording of Lennon performing the Beatles’ “Revolution” with the Dirty Mac. I need this box set… Check out the video above for more details.
