This past Wednesday I got to witness a truly fun performance from a band that just gets it. Fans want to Rock, they bring the Rock, and it all results in an almost collaborative experience where the crowd pumps up the band and the guys onstage feed off that energy to deliver on the goods. This night was a party and like all good parties, you leave the place with a great impression.
The Darkness know how to shred and the Hawkins brothers don’t skimp out on the showmanship when the time came to do the solos. Leading man Justin not only proved to be a fine performer, but he also showed a lot of charm throughout the show with his quips and anecdotes in between songs, indiscriminately flirting with everyone who made eye contact, wearing jackets and hats off the bodies of fans, and even inviting some lucky people from the crowd to dance around onstage. There’s something so great about seeing a band live that inspires the organic impulse to do your own air guitar solos.
Fists were pumping, arms swaying, heads banging, and a whole lot of rocking out. The setlist was packed with songs that got the crowd going like “Love Is Only a Feeling,” “Black Shuck,” “One Way Ticket,” “Solid Gold,” “I Believe In a Thing Called Love,” and set closer “Love On The Rocks With No Ice.”
Throughout the night a fan kept yelling “the darkness doesn’t suck.” They couldn’t have said it better.
