Brooklyn art rock outfit BODEGA are making their first appearance on our pages today on the heels of the announcement of their debut album, Endless Scroll, due out June 1st via What’s Your Rupture?. Endless Scroll was recorded and produced by Austin Brown (Parquet Courts) on the same Tascam 388 tape machine used for their LP Light Up Gold. It was mixed and mastered by Jonathan Schenke at Dr. Wu’s.
The group brings together elements of Post Punk, Hip Hop, and Pop, this combination exemplified by their lead single “Can’t Knock the Hustle,” for which they’re also releasing its accompanying music video today. The artsy clip is eye-catching to say the least, which shows the group performing the track while eating and playing with soft-serve ice cream in odd, and sometimes provocative ways.
Speaking of the track in a news release, Ben Hozie comments,
“A few years ago I found myself working at an obnoxious soft serve shoppe in Union Square with this great Jamaican guy named Steven, who was an aspiring rapper. We used to engage in strange late-night Socratic discussions and the day Jay-Z’s Magna Carta Holy Grail came out he led me into a whirlpool of a syllogism that lead to the disastrous results heard on the track. Lesson learned: logic means nothing without context (in this case, Jay-Z’s). Unfortunately, the premise that ’capital=beyond critique’ is mostly considered sound in our artificially sweetened augmented-reality world…. Care for a sample? For the advertisement of the song we wanted to make a proper pop clip, one I hope Steven appreciates. Nikki (Belfiglio) directed it and Taylor Christoffelphotographed it.”
