This past week I had the pleasure of seeing Lewis Del Mar at Lincoln Hall, a young up and coming band just embarking on their first ever tour. I was pleasantly surprised with the amount of people that showed up for them and I think they were too. Danny Miller, the lead singer and guitarist, opened up with thanking everyone and brought up how him and his buddy Max Harwood, the drummer and producer of the band, had been doing music together since they were in grade school. The band opened up with one their new songs, “Loud(y)” off their newest album Lewis Del Mar. With a mixture of indie pop and a little angst, the band gave off a very original vibe. I got into this band maybe a year ago and at first couldn’t quite place them in a genre, which later would be the reason why I would enjoy them as much as I do now. I think nowadays with so many talented artists and so many more making their way up the ladder of the music industry, it can be difficult as a band to find an original sound without totally veering away from what is popular. However, Lewis Del Mar does a great job of combining honest and relevant lyrics with a great sound and as a result, putting on a fantastic show. One of the best things to experience at a concert is the realization that whoever is performing is even better live than they are through your own headphones, Lewis Del Mar was totally that for me.
At one point they played their most popular song, “Painting (Masterpiece)” and the audience went crazy for it (myself included). It was so genuine watching them perform this song; both Danny and Max have incredible stage presence and totally feed off each other’s vibes. When the song was over Max paused and said, “You know this being our first tour and all, its insane watching you all out there singing our songs and knowing the words. It means a lot seriously.”
These guys had people moving, swaying, singing, dancing; they put on a show full of passion and intimacy, something that was very evident just watching the audience alone. At one point I glanced over at the bartender and couldn’t help but laugh seeing her jam out behind the bar while handing someone a beer. Real shit. People felt it, it was awesome. The band went on to play “Waves,” “Malt Liquor,” “14 Faces,” and even did their own rendition of Rhianna’s “Bitch Better Have My Money.” I loved that, watching them turn such a popular song into their own feel and vibe. These guys really put on a killer show, and all in all, I think set a good foundation for the rest of their tour. I highly recommend checking out their latest album should you have not done so already.
