‘Twas a nice and sunny Thursday morning here in Chicago, so it only got brighter when Chicago’s very own Mick Jenkins decided to drop a new flame. The track The Artful Dodger, kicks off with Mick’s tenacious flow over a BadBadNotGood sample and his sharp lyrics give us that fresh breath of air and consolidation we need from time to time.
It was produced by Kaytranada and THEMpeople, both in which have a history of working with Mick. Your Love and P’s and Q’s, not only were produced by Kaytranda but both were featured on his last project Wave[s]. More recently, THEMpeople produced two songs that he released while collaborating with theMIND called $3,000 Advice and Grenade Theory.
However, he hasn’t gone full “Frank Ocean” on us, he’s still been around in the music world, doing multiple appearances and performances, including at SXSW, and even being featured on plenty of tracks, one being Supa Bwe’s Breakfast and Chill, that combined two talented rappers with distinct flows nicely. Earlier in January, he did a smooth cover for TheSenseiBlue’s On The Map featuring BadBadNotGood. His wavy style of reworking this created even more of an anticipation for what else he’s been working on.
Mick’s been teasing us for quite sometime now, posting pictures to twitter of tracks that he’s working on, saying “Running through these for the next few…See how this thing sounds from top to bottom.” So does this mean this is a little taste of what to expect from the debut album…
[T]he [H]ealing [C]omponent? Let’s hope so. Regardless, it’s Mick.
So while you wait for the album, Drink more water and enjoy his latest below.
