In exclusive announcement on Billboard, Jamila Woods announced that she’s signed with local indie label/purveyors of cool, Closed Sessions. RTC/Alex Fruchter said of landing the rising Chicago star: “Jamila Woods is an incredibly talented artist that also stands for something… Her addition to Closed Sessions brings great new music to the table, but also a personality and energy that we can all benefit and learn from.”
Along with that news, Jamila also released her new CS track “blk girl soldier,” produced by Jus Cuz and Saba. Speaking on the inspiration for the song, Woods declared:
I drew inspiration from a protest chant I learned at a Black Youth Project 100 meeting in Chicago… I love how music and chants were used in the Civil Rights movement to help people keep marching… I’m interested in figuring out what freedom songs would sound like in 2016. My hope is that ‘blk girl soldier’ is a freedom song for black women today who are fighting the macro and microagressions of daily life in our city/country/world.
You almost don’t know who to congratulate here, Closed Sessions for continuing to grow and align themselves with some of the best artists in the Chi, or to Jamila for continuing to make waves and releasing the first piece of her forthcoming project. Let’s go with both.
