On Friday night we were on the scene to cover the final date of Mick Jenkins 2015 tour in support of the release of his latest project Wave[s].
The show was already before we even stepped into the iconic Metro, with a roster featuring French producer STWO, jSTOCK, and the Mind serving as the openers. STWO kicked things off with a DJ set to get the crowd riled up with cuts like Vic Mensa’s “Wimme Nah” and “U Mad” along with song of the year “Hotline Bling.” The mood was set, the night was going to be lit.
Fellow FREENATION man jSTOCK was a dope act to follow with a set that incorporated elements of reggae and classic Hip Hop production. The music was excellent enough, but it was the inspirational message he delivered throughout his time on the mic that really made his worth watching. Next up was The Mind, who we know most prominently from his contributions to Stefan Ponce’s “Lost In Translation” and Mick’s own “Dehydration.” Though short, his time as the main focus of the spotlight for those couple of tracks nothing but dope. Graduating from his role as the feature artist to the main act would be more than welcomed and appreciated.
Now on to the man we all headed to the North side to see. Mick’s performance was a true highlight of the year; his towering presence was felt throughout the venue. The setlist included plenty of cuts from The Water[s] and Wave[s], including “P’s & Q’s,” from the later project that was undoubtedly one of the highlights. Mick also gave way to couple of guests, bringing out Noname Gypsy to perform “Comfortable” and Hurt Everybody to perform their dope collaboration best known as “Gang” and then performing “Treat Me Caucasian” with Supa. During “Gang” the whole crew took over the stage and it was so lit that it even compelled Mick to stage dive. You know you’re loved if you’re a 6’+ tall man that can jump into a crowd and have them catch you. That’s love!
See the grand finale performance of “Social Network (Gang)” with Hurt Everybody above, and hit the jump to see “P’s & Q’s” and “Treat Me Caucasian.”
