Black Sabbath are widely considered the creators of Metal, thanks to their music featuring dark imagery and heavy sound.
In an interview for The Complete History of Heavy Metal: Fingers Bloody Fingers, VH1 explores the birth of the genre by going to the first source, Black Sabbath’s guitarist Tony Iommi. The story is the stuff of legend, but if you’re not familiar with it or simply want to relive it, this is an excellent clip for you.
Iommi recounts how he suffered an accident on his last day working in a factory before he was to set out on a European tour with a local Birmingham band. While working on a new machine, Iommi lost the tips of a pair of fingers, leading him to believe that his guitar playing days were over. But a visit from a co-worker brought a shining light to this mess as he told Iommi the story about Django Reinhardt, a revered guitar player who had also lost his fingers.
The rest is, as they say, history. The animation really makes this story much more vivid and it’s a cool spin to the old tale. Check it out above.
