Last night, Tech N9ne’s Independent Grind Tour hit Chicago’s House of Blues. Psychward Druggies, Jarren Benton and Freddie Gibbs helped open up the show for Tech. This was by far the smoothest running show we have ever been too. There were only about 5 minute intervals between every set. The stage crew was definitely on point and definitely made the show that much more enjoyable.
All parties involved put on a great show. Psychward Druggies opened up the show with a very energetic set. The crowd was with them from the start and stayed very attentive throughout the rest of the show. Jarren Benton, a 2014 XXL Freshman, hit the stage right after Psychward and proved to me and I’m sure others in the crowd, that he deserved that final Freshman spot. Jarren’s live show is really good and his performances of “Cadillacs and Chevy’s” and “Gimmie The Loot” were my favorite.
With the crowd more than warmed up, Gangsta Gibbs was next to grace the HOB stage. Gibbs performed many of his classics but also managed to sprinkle in new joints off of Cocaine Piñata like “Thuggin” and “Shitsville.” If you haven’t checked out Cocaine Piñata yet, do yourself a favor and give it a listen. Gibbs and Madlib made a great project. The headliner of the night, Tech N9ne, hit the stage only minutes after Gibbs. Backed by a awesome stage setup, Tech performed for what seemed to be very diehard fans. I am not familiar with his catalog, but I must admit his live show is one of the best I have ever seen. And we go to tons of shows every year. I will be sure to do my research and get caught up with his material.
