Last night, (12/19/13) Marrow played a sold-out show at Chicago’s Schubas Tavern to usher in a new era for former Kids These Days members Liam Cunningham, Macie Stewart, Lane Beckstrom plus new drummer Matt Carroll. The young band was celebrating the release of their new EP, Two, with a little help from Lamp and Passerines who served as openers.
This recap a little different from the rest we tend to cover seeing how the new band were debuting most of the songs featured on their setlist. The two we do know, from their Two EP, are “She Chose You” (shown above) and “Mother of Maladies” and we definitely captured those. The band sounded excellently playing this new batch of songs, which included some with Folk undertones and another titled “Corsicana” (I believe it was called; named after a small Texas town that Liam admitted to never having visited before) that leaned towards New Wave. One of their most impressive tracks was one that concluded with LC playing a ferocious solo that can be seen on our Instagram, but I have to say it doesn’t do it enough justice.

Liam’s guitar work was awesome as he played classic styled Rock riffs for some songs and more complex fingerpicking on others. Macie looked like a total badass by playing keys, guitar (electric and acoustic) and even worked in some special effects throughout the night. Lane was as cool and reliable as ever on bass, and as much as we might miss Stix playing along with these guys, Matt Carroll did a great job manning the skins.
All in all they sounded great and those of us lucky enough to have attended the show must be especially excited about hearing studio versions (sometime soon?) of the songs Marrow played that night.
