The World Football Challenge has come back to the States, bringing with it some of the best teams from around the world compete against each other and some American sides.
This year the European teams that have crossed the Atlantic to showcase the Old World’s talent are Real Madrid (La Liga champions), Chelsea (Champions League champions), Liverpool, Celtic (Scottish PL Champions), Milan, & Paris Saint-Germain (who just signed Swedish superstar Zlatan Ibrahimovic). For the teams representing this side of the world, we have the Seattle Sounders, the LA Galaxy, DC United, Toronto FC & Santos Laguna.
Although not a part of the WFC, other European sides have made their way to the U.S. for their pre-season preparations including Aston Villa & AS Roma.
The WFC tournament is an exhibition tournament that’s sponsored by Herbalife. The tournament holds matches in the U.S. and Canada is meant to be held every summer starting in 2009, with the exception of 2010 because of the World Cup in South Africa.
In 2009, the WFC champions were Chelsea, then managed by José Mourinho. In 2011, the WFC champions were Real Madrid, now managed by Mourinho.
