FC Barcelona’s newest legend sets yet another record for his already-historic 2011-’12 season.
The diminutive forward has turned into a truly amazing goalscorer in the last two seasons; this year marking his most prolific season yet. His latest accomplishment: 50 goals in league play.
His 50 goals in La Liga sets the new record for goals scored in a season, breaking the record of 40 goals that was set last year by Real Madrid’s own phenom, Cristiano Ronaldo. That 50-goal mark could surely grant him the Pitxitxi. While becoming the first player to score half a century of goals in a season, Lionel has also outscored several teams in some of the top leagues of Europe. Barcelona’s number 10 has more goals by himself than 13 teams in Spain’s La Liga (after 37 games), 15 French teams in La Ligue (over 35 games), 14 of the English Premier League’s teams (after 37 games), 13 German Bundesliga squads (after completing 34 games) and 12 of the Serie A teams in Italy.
Lionel Messi should have no problem extending his total tally for the season as his team visits Real Betis (12th in La Liga) for the last fixture of the season.
Until then, Lionel Messi has cemented his place in the history books as one of the most incredible and prolific goalscorers of all time.
